Apple’s education initiative was strengthened earlier this summer when it revised the iTunes Store’s Terms to allow children under the age of 13 to manage their own account. To be approved the Apple ID must be requested by an “approved educational institution.”
The new terms read:
This iTunes Service is only available for individuals age 13 years or older, unless you are under 13 years old and your Apple ID was provided to you as a result of a request by an approved educational institution.
These new conditions apply to the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore and Mac App Store.
Schools will need to request permission from parents before requesting the Apple IDs.
This is great news for education as more and more iPads are appearing in classes.
